Project Green Classrooms
(AKA: Get Kids Outside in Maryland)
Why do we want to get kids outside?
What program is this?
Glad you asked!
Project Green Classrooms is a joint effort by several Maryland state agencies and some other helpful partners to ensure that every child in Maryland has the opportunity to learn about their local environment, develop a connection with nature, and have a better sense of place in their natural surroundings.
Please explore this site and the included maps. Find destinations statewide where natural interactive learning and recreation can occur. Many of these facilities schedule programs with schools or communities or hold events for families or groups. The map also contains transportation options, and public school locations (to determine proximity to nature sites) throughout Maryland.
We like learning too! So if you have any suggestions for additional locations or questions, please email us at mdotgis@mdot.state.md.us
These Destinations are the places you want to visit. This is the heart of this site. Visit! Get outside!
Zoom in and out and check out various locations and move around in the map.
Each location has a picture and a link for Google Map directions and specific details.
So how do we get there? And what is nearby?
Can we get to it from 2 feet or 2 wheels?
These are some select hiking trails from our friends over at USGS. The bright green trails represent the best biking trails in the state. These are road-separated bike routes. There are also some opportunities for off-road riding on trails, and even some preliminary ideas about some streets that are more accommodating for bikes.
Ride the Rails!
Maryland boasts a superb regional rail system with statewide MARC Commuter trains and interstate Amtrak routes.
More locally to Washington DC & Baltimore, there are the various WMATA Metro Lines in the District, the Baltimore Subway Line, and the Baltimore Light Rail.
Zoom in to see the associated stations in proximity to our Green Classrooms.
Numerous bus routes throughout the state also provide access to large areas of Maryland communities. These buses connect the major metropolitan areas of Baltimore & Washington as well as traversing nearly the entire state. Chances are pretty good that a bus will get you to a nearby Green Classroom.
And while our Green Classrooms are fun, let's mix them in with our more traditional schools.
Chances are that a public and/or charter K-12 school is located close to a Project Green Classroom.
